Deadline Expires Amid Stalemate

The expiration of Iran’s 45-day deadline to the United States regarding its naval blockade occurred on Oct. 1, according to Robert Pape, a political scientist at the University of Chicago. Following this date, Tehran retained the option of launching renewed attacks, signaling that the conflict remains in a stalemate with negotiations not entirely collapsed.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed Wednesday that an official U.S. response was received through mediators. This communication came as Tehran reviewed a counterproposal from the Trump administration to a seven-day ceasefire pitch that President Donald Trump had promptly rejected.

President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on Thursday that Iran “has never avoided” dialogue with the United States despite being attacked three times during negotiations. He added that there is “good coordination and synergy among the heads of state” and that everyone is seeking to resolve problems and shortcomings.

Economic Pressure Mounts

The diplomatic maneuvering coincides with severe economic strain within Iran. The Iranian rial has hit new record lows against the dollar due to Operation Economic Outcast, a U.S. initiative aimed at pressuring Tehran.

Reports suggest that Iranian crude exports through the Strait of Hormuz are near zero for September as the U.S. naval blockade bites. In response to these restrictions at sea, Pezeshkian stated Iran is seeking to widen import-export avenues via land with Pakistan, Iraq, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan.

Citing Tasnim news, Pezeshkian told a meeting of entrepreneurs that the government is “seriously seeking to resolve all issues and problems related to the business sector.” Despite these efforts, TIME reported that Trump’s timeline expected the war to be over with a new regime in place, but the Islamic Republic has remained resilient.

U.S. Stance on Escalation

Tensions remain high as President Trump told TIME he may escalate attacks on Iran after the November midterms if an acceptable deal is not reached. He stated, “Because by annihilating Iran, we’ve created peace in the world.”

Trump claimed his removal of Nicolás Maduro and elevation of Delcy Rodríguez in Venezuela proves U.S. power projection works, though reports note this model has not worked with Iran.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent posted on September 28, 2026, that the administration will continue to degrade Iran’s ability to fund terrorism and develop a nuclear weapon.
