JDU Sets Sights on Eastern and Central UP
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) [JDU] will hold a state-level party workers' conference in Varanasi on October 25, 2026, to launch its campaign for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The party aims to contest between 40 to 50 assembly constituencies in the northern state.
The JDU’s electoral focus will target Kurmi, Patel, and Non-Yadav Other Backward Class (OBC)-dominated belts in eastern and central Uttar Pradesh. According to confirmations shared by JDU state leader Anup Singh Patel, the conference will bring together frontline party strategists to formulate booth-level strategies for these targeted regions.
Bihar government minister Nishant Kumar, accompanied by JDU National Working President Sanjay Jha and other senior leaders, will spearhead the convention. The gathering aims to energize district cadres and unite grassroots booth workers, district presidents, and regional office-bearers from across eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Strategic Moves and Historical Context
Nishant Kumar is scheduled to visit the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham to offer prayers and seek divine blessings for the party’s political expansion beyond Bihar's borders. Party strategists claim that ground teams have already conducted preliminary voter mapping and organizational audits across target constituencies.
Internal party reports indicate that JDU leadership intends to seek a substantial seat-sharing quota as the principal National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner alongside the Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP] at the Centre. However, the central leadership of the BJP has yet to formalize seat-sharing formulas for Uttar Pradesh.
The party’s current organizational push follows its performance in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. In that contest, the JDU campaigned independently across 26 assembly seats after pre-poll alliance talks with the BJP failed. The party suffered a complete rout, failing to secure a single seat.
In the years since that defeat, the party has spent time reconstructing district committees and mobilizing backward caste associations under Anup Singh Patel’s coordination. The decision to launch its campaign from Varanasi has surprised political observers, signaling that the party will not remain a silent bystander in Uttar Pradesh politics.
