King Abdullah Issues Stark Warning at United Nations
Jordan’s King Abdullah addressed the United Nations General Assembly late last month, delivering a message of severe concern regarding Israel’s policies and their impact on regional stability. According to analyst Yossi Mekelberg, the Jordanian ruler expressed wrath toward Israel, signaling that his patience with the neighboring state is wearing thin.
King Abdullah outlined three specific illusions he believes surround the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He warned against the idea of dealing separately with the West Bank and Gaza, the belief that Israeli leadership might change its rejection of Palestinian statehood, and the notion that the Arab world has never sought peace.
The King expressed fear that the ideological zeal of Israel’s right-wing government could lead to an attempt to push Palestinians east of the Jordan River. He described such a move as tantamount to a declaration of war. Additionally, he suggested that the West Bank is already being annexed, making the two-state solution increasingly difficult to achieve.
Mekelberg noted that the timing of the speech, delivered on the eve of an Israeli general election, was intended as a direct message. The statement indicated that Israel cannot rely indefinitely on Jordan while its actions endanger Jordanian interests.
Diplomatic Efforts and Ceasefire Talks
Amid these diplomatic tensions, Egypt hosted an Israeli delegation for truce talks mediated by Qatar and Egypt. The negotiations focused on a six-week suspension of Israel’s offensive in exchange for the release of 40 of the 130 hostages held by Hamas.
Hamas sought to use any potential deal to end fighting and withdraw Israeli forces from Gaza. In contrast, Israel ruled out an end to fighting, stating it would eventually resume efforts to dismantle Hamas.
The World Court has ordered Israel to take action to ensure basic food supplies to the population of Gaza. This legal directive comes as health officials report that Israeli military strikes have killed dozens of Palestinians across the Gaza Strip on Sunday.
Recent Casualties and Hospital Strikes
Health officials reported that an Israeli air strike killed nine people in Bani Suhaila near Khan Younis and four people in Al-Maghazi camp. Hamas media and health officials stated that an Israeli air strike also hit tents inside Shuhada Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir Al-Balah, killing four people.
Local health authorities report that over 32,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s military offensive in Gaza since Oct. 7.
Borders and Security Cooperation
Israel and Jordan share a 300 km land border along the Jordan River and the Arava/Wadi Araba. Historically, cooperation between the two nations has helped prevent militancy, infiltration, and smuggling across this shared boundary.
The current deterioration in relations marks a significant shift from previous security coordination, as King Abdullah’s warnings highlight the growing risk to regional stability if the Palestinian conflict remains unresolved.
