Maduro Speaks on Generational Change at AVP Congress
Joseph Maduro addressed members of the Aruban People's Party (AVP) during the party's 2026 Congress, which was held under the theme 'Era di Relevo,' or Era of Transition. As the AVP prepares for a new generation to assume greater leadership roles within the organization, Maduro shared his perspectives on the responsibilities associated with this shift.
During his address, Maduro emphasized that public servants must maintain a constant focus on the citizens they represent. He identified this connection to the electorate as the most fundamental principle of leadership, according to reports from Islands Daily. This emphasis on generational change and leadership responsibilities in Aruba was central to his message at the congress.
Opposition Criticizes Government Parliamentary Engagement
While Maduro focused on internal party transition, opposition figures highlighted concerns regarding the current administration's legislative conduct. Member of Parliament Xiomara Maduro stated that the AVP-FUTURO Government lacks the capacity to govern Aruba effectively.
Xiomara Maduro reported specific deficiencies in the government's interaction with parliament during the 2025–2026 parliamentary year. She noted that out of 29 requested public meetings, only 11 were convened by the administration.
Furthermore, she claimed that out of eight requested question hours, only two were called. Xiomara Maduro alleged that in three out of every four cases, Parliament was not given the opportunity to question the Government.
Legislative and Financial Oversight Concerns
Beyond procedural issues, Xiomara Maduro pointed to legislative delays as evidence of governance failures. She stated that the AVP-FUTURO administration has not submitted a new LIM (Ministerial Integration Law) after more than 500 days in office.
Financial oversight was also cited as a point of contention. Xiomara Maduro reported that while Afl. 74 million was available for investment in 2025, only Afl. 30 million, representing 40 percent of the funds, was utilized or accounted for in her report.
