Wike Links Cabinet Tenure to Electoral Performance

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, declared on Monday that his continued service in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet is contingent upon securing electoral victories for the president in two specific regions: the FCT and Rivers State. Speaking to leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja, Wike stated that he would resign as FCT Minister on January 17, 2027, if Tinubu loses the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, in either of those territories. Wike framed his position within the administration as dependent on his ability to deliver tangible political results in areas where he holds significant influence. He told the audience that his worthiness to remain in office is tied directly to these outcomes. “If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said, according to reports from PM News Nigeria. He added, “If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT.”

Coalition Building Across Party Lines

In addition to outlining the conditions for his own tenure, Wike addressed the strategy being employed to support Tinubu’s re-election bid. He confirmed that the administration is actively collaborating with politicians from various political parties to secure victories for Tinubu and other endorsed candidates in the FCT. Wike emphasized the cross-party nature of this effort, noting that a unified coalition is being formed to deliver results in the capital territory. “In the FCT, we are running a unified coalition across parties to deliver results,” Wike said. He clarified the administration’s direction regarding the presidency, stating, “Let us be clear on direction: for the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu.” The minister also provided details on other candidates supported by this coalition in the upcoming elections. He mentioned former senator Philip Aduda and two House of Representatives candidates who previously served as area council chairmen as part of the slate being backed by the group. Wike’s comments to the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association highlighted both the high stakes he places on his ministerial role and the coordinated political machinery being deployed ahead of the 2027 general elections.
