Strategic Shift for Wild-Card Round

Doosan Bears manager Kim Won-hyong announced Monday that American starting pitcher Zach Logue will pitch out of the bullpen during the upcoming South Korean baseball postseason. The move comes as the Bears prepare to enter the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) playoffs, having clinched the fifth seed and a spot in the wild-card round.

The wild-card series is scheduled to begin Wednesday against the No. 4 seed. Under KBO rules for this stage, the lower-seeded team must win two consecutive games on the road to advance. Kim stated that he saw no strategic value in saving starting pitchers for later rounds because the immediate objective is to clear the wild-card hurdle.

"We have to win two straight games and we cannot afford to get ahead of ourselves," Kim told reporters. He emphasized that the team requires every available pitcher, with the exception of their potential Game 2 starter, in case that pitcher is "roughed up after just a few innings." This flexibility allows the Bears to deploy their most reliable arms in high-leverage situations during the short series.

Rotation Adjustments and Pitcher Performance

Gwak Been has been identified as the regular-season leader in both earned run average (ERA) and strikeouts, making him the choice to start Game 1. For Game 2, which would only be necessary if the Bears force a second contest, Wes Benjamin or Choi Min-seok are expected to take the mound.

Logue’s decision to move to relief follows a season where his performance metrics declined compared to his previous year. This season, Logue posted an 8-7 record with a 4.27 ERA. In contrast, during last year, he recorded a 10-8 record and a 2.81 ERA. The shift in performance was accompanied by a higher walk rate and a lower strikeout rate this year.

Logue attributed his lack of consistency to increased familiarity among KBO hitters against him. "I think there is definitely an aspect of luck for that," he said regarding the statistical drop-off. Despite these challenges, the Bears have opted to utilize his experience in a relief capacity rather than starting role.

Pitching Staff Outlook

Despite the change in role, Logue expressed confidence in the team's overall pitching depth heading into the postseason. "We are ready to go wherever and a really good pitching staff I think is what ultimately wins you a championship," he said.

Logue also commented on his personal experience with the team this season. "It has been a lot more fun for me to be a part of a winning team. So I am really looking forward to going into the postseason and seeing what we can do," he added.

Bullpen Role and Playoff Implications

The transition from starter to reliever allows Logue to contribute to the Bears' immediate goal of advancing past the first round. By keeping him available out of the bullpen, Kim Won-hyong ensures that the team has an additional option if their primary starters struggle early in either game.

This strategic adjustment highlights the depth of the Doosan Bears' roster as they face the No. 4 seed. The ability to shuffle pitchers freely provides a tactical advantage in a series where every inning is critical. Logue's willingness to adapt to this new role underscores the team's collective focus on postseason success.

As the playoffs approach, the Bears will rely on this versatile pitching staff to navigate the challenges of the wild-card round. The decision to use Logue in relief reflects a pragmatic approach to maximizing their chances of winning two straight games on the road.
