Choi’s Final Competitive Goal

Golf legend K.J. Choi has identified reaching his 500th PGA Tour start at a major as his final competitive challenge. The 56-year-old South Korean golfer is currently in his 40th year of professional play, a milestone he marks by recalling the exact date he first picked up a club: March 5, 1987.

Choi’s career includes several historic firsts for Korean golfers. He became the first Korean to earn a PGA Tour card, the first to win on the PGA Tour, and the first to win the Players Championship. Following his tenure on the regular tour, he became the first Korean to compete on the PGA Tour Champions, where he has secured two victories.

His recent competitive record includes winning the SK Telecom Open on the KPGA Tour two years ago and claiming the Senior Open on the PGA Tour Champions in 2024. Despite these successes, Choi acknowledges physical changes associated with his long career. He stated that he is currently dealing with back pain and has lost some flexibility since his recent wins.

However, Choi remains optimistic about his future longevity in the sport. He expressed confidence that he can continue to play for at least 10 more years after rebuilding his body through recovery and training.

Hosting the Invitational in Yeoju

In addition to his personal competitive goals, Choi is currently focused on hosting the Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance K.J. Choi Invitational. The event is scheduled to run for four days, beginning on Oct. 1 at the Ferrum Club in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province.

The tournament serves as a platform for Choi to engage with the golf community while he works toward his milestone of 500 PGA Tour starts at major championships. His participation in this event aligns with his broader objective of maintaining his presence on the tour despite the physical demands of his age and history.

Legacy and Family

Choi’s career spans four decades, during which he won eight titles on the U.S. circuit. His journey began when he was 17 years old, and he has since become a living legend in Korean men's golf.

Beyond his professional achievements, Choi has spoken about his role as a father of three. He noted that his youngest son turned professional this year, continuing the family’s involvement in the sport. Choi also emphasized the value of giving back to the community as a principle he intends to maintain throughout his life.
