Deadly Missile Strike Hits Grain Cargo Vessel Near Odesa

Kyiv authorities have accused Moscow of launching a deadly strike against a Turkish-owned cargo ship carrying grain as it departed from a port near Odesa. According to Ukraine's navy, the attack involved three cruise missiles fired at the Golden Leo. The vessel was flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau when the incident occurred.

Ukraine Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated that the ship carried grain and included crew members who were citizens of Syria and India. Prime Minister Sergiy Koretsky confirmed to reporters that the strike took place near Odesa after the vessel left port. The attack resulted in significant casualties among the maritime workforce.

Kyiv transport minister Mykola Kalashnyk provided an update on Telegram regarding the status of those aboard the ship. He reported that eight crew members were successfully rescued following the incident. Among the survivors, two individuals sustained injuries during the event. However, as of the latest confirmation from officials in Kyiv, six sailors have been confirmed dead and four others remain missing.

Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga added a specific detail regarding the fatalities on board, confirming that a Ukrainian maritime pilot was among those killed in the attack. In a statement posted to X, also known as Twitter, Sybiga addressed the broader context of Russian aggression during this period. He wrote: "While the world is still responding to Russia's brutal overnight attack on Kyiv, Moscow continues its campaign of terror throughout the day." This comment linked the maritime incident to simultaneous attacks elsewhere.

Simultaneous Ballistic Missile Assaults on Ukrainian Cities

The events involving the cargo ship occurred in conjunction with a large-scale Russian ballistic missile assault targeting Ukraine's capital and other major cities. Reports indicate that Russia launched one of its biggest such attacks during this timeframe, which took place over Sunday night.

According to Luke Harding reporting on the incident at least six people died as a result of these strikes across various locations in Ukrainian territory. Dozens more individuals were injured by the explosions and shelling caused by Russian forces. The assault lasted for approximately five hours before subsiding, leaving behind fires and structural damage throughout the capital.

Damage to Infrastructure and Residential Areas

A three-storey building caught fire in Shevchenkivskyi district within Kyiv's central area following the barrage of missiles. Rescuers worked through the night digging out several people trapped inside the burning structure before recovering a body from the wreckage.

Ukrainian officials reported that fires were observed at multiple locations across four other areas hit by Russian fire and missile strikes. These incidents included damage to offices, residential buildings, and a dormitory complex in different parts of the city. The scale of destruction highlighted the intensity of the five-hour overnight assault.

Ukrainian Counter-Operations Against Russian Oil Infrastructure

In response to attacks on Ukrainian soil, Kyiv officials announced that Ukrainian forces conducted retaliatory strikes against energy infrastructure within Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Sunday that these operations targeted three oil depots and a fuel facility located in the southern Stavropol region of Russia.

Zelenskyy did not elaborate further on specific details regarding the operational outcomes or tactical advantages gained from this strike during his public address. The focus remained on targeting Russian energy assets to degrade their capacity to sustain war efforts.

Putin Expresses Gratitude for North Korean Support

Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed a visiting foreign minister while discussing international alliances and support networks. During the meeting, he expressed gratitude toward Pyongyang for its assistance in the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kyiv. The visit appears to have taken place at a time when diplomatic channels remain active despite intense military engagements.

Context of International Relations Amidst Conflict

The interaction involving North Korean leadership represents another dimension of the geopolitical landscape surrounding the war. While details regarding specific forms of support from Pyongyang were not fully elaborated upon in public statements, Putin's remarks underscored a continued reliance on external partners for strategic objectives.
