Renovation project initiated ahead of anniversary
The United States is preparing to celebrate its 250th birthday on July 4, 2026.
President Donald Trump initiated a renovation project for the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington. The project aimed to paint the pool's surface "American flag blue" ahead of the anniversary.
Project costs and contracts
The renovation project's cost has been reported to be over $14 million, with some sources citing $14.2 million or $14.8 million in contracts.
President Trump's initial estimates for the project were between $1.5 million and $2 million.
A no-bid contract for waterproofing and repainting was awarded to Atlantic Industrial Coatings. The company had previously worked on one of President Trump's golf clubs.
Another no-bid contract for a new water purification system was given to Greenwater Services, which is owned by a neighbor of President Trump.
Construction timeline
The pool was drained and resurfaced starting in April 2026. The work was completed, and the pool began refilling around June 4, 2026.
Algae bloom reported after refill
Days after the pool was refilled in early June 2026, a large algae bloom appeared, turning the water green.
The Potomac River supplies the pool and contributes nitrogen and phosphorus to the water system.
Causes of the bloom
Professor Patricia Glibert from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science suggested the bloom was likely fueled by warm weather, lingering algae, and nutrient-rich water.
Some experts speculated that the darker blue color of the pool's new coating might absorb more heat, promoting algae growth.
Cleanup efforts
National Park Service crews are working to remove the algae using water pumps, skimmers, and by adding hydrogen peroxide to the water. The Department of the Interior stated it is employing "advanced nanobubbler technology" to destroy algae cells.
Official statements on the bloom
The Department of the Interior stated that the initial algae outbreak was part of the normal startup process and consisted of residual algae from the supply lines. The department asserted that President Donald J. Trump is an expert builder who has fixed the Reflecting Pool for good.
Reports on pool surface
Reports indicate that the "American flag blue" rubber layer or sealant applied to the pool's bottom is peeling.
President Trump's comments
President Trump claimed the renovation would last for 100 years. He attributed the problems and peeling paint to vandalism, though no evidence has been provided for this claim.
Public reaction
Visitors described the pool as "disgusting" and "like vomit" due to the green algae. Some passersby reportedly wrote profanities in the algae.
