MDMK Likely to Quit DMK-Led Alliance

Sources in the MDMK said the party is likely to formally announce its exit from the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) at its General Council meeting on June 27.

This development follows a reported meeting between Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's TVK government and leaders of the alliance, amid indications of growing political engagement between the two sides.

Reasons for Potential Exit

The MDMK could not openly back the new government because its two MLAs were elected on the DMK's 'Rising Sun' symbol. Unlike other parties in the coalition, this specific electoral arrangement prevented open support for the administration.

Party leaders reportedly believe the only viable option is for these legislators to resign from their current positions, contest by-elections, and then extend support to the ruling alliance if they are re-elected.

Potential Political Realignment

The reported move would mark a major political realignment in Tamil Nadu. Several former DMK allies have previously been part of such alliances or formed similar coalitions with the party.

These parties include the VCK, IUML, CPI and CPI(M). The potential departure of the MDMK is noted alongside these historical shifts within the state's political landscape.
