Mets Finalizing Deal with Former Twins Executive
The New York Mets are closing in on hiring Derek Falvey to a front office position, according to a report by Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic. The organization is moving forward with the former Minnesota Twins executive as it looks to bolster its leadership structure for the upcoming season.
Falvey is expected to assume a "significant role" in team decisions, though his exact title within the Mets' hierarchy remains unclear at this time. The hiring marks a return to New York for Falvey, who previously worked with current Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns in Cleveland.
Collaborative Leadership Under Cohen and Stearns
Mets owner Steve Cohen has indicated an intention to expand the front office staff this offseason. Cohen stated that he would be looking to add voices to the organization, emphasizing a collaborative effort with president of baseball operations David Stearns.
Cohen’s comments regarding the search for additional personnel were relayed by Steve Berman of The Athletic. The addition of Falvey aligns with this strategy to bring in experienced executives who can contribute to high-level decision-making processes.
Previous Tenure in Cleveland and Minnesota
Falvey and Stearns previously served together with the Cleveland Guardians, starting in 2011. During that period, Falvey served as co-director of baseball operations alongside Stearns before both executives moved to different organizations.
Following his time in Cleveland, Falvey took over as chief baseball officer in Minnesota after the 2016 season. He subsequently served a dual president role with the Twins before departing the organization unexpectedly in January following a split with executive chair Tom Pohlad.
Twins Playoff Record and Recent Mets Performance
During his tenure as president of baseball operations in Minnesota, Falvey led the Twins to four playoff appearances. The team recorded a 101-win season in 2019 but never advanced beyond the American League Division Series during his time with the franchise.
The Mets are currently finishing their season on a positive trajectory. New York has remained above .500 since the beginning of August, driven by strong offensive production throughout September.
