Postseason Performance Highlights Sinclair's Potential
The Washington Nationals are expected to assign pitcher Jack Sinclair a larger role with their pitching staff in 2027, following his performance to close out the 2026 season. The right-hander was called up from Triple-A Rochester on Sept. 4 and made 11 appearances for Washington.
During that span, Sinclair posted a 2.45 earned run average across 11 innings. He recorded five holds and converted one save opportunity while allowing just four walks and hitting three batters. His fastball averaged 96.6 mph during this period.
Sinclair demonstrated significant effectiveness against specific batter types. He held right-handed hitters to a .048 batting average and maintained a .158 batting average against overall in 2026. His performance also included a 0.91 walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP) statistic.
Manager Blake Butera praised Sinclair's consistency and composure during his time with the major league club. "I think that you just get a good feeling when he takes the ball," Butera told MLB.com. He added, "He's just the same guy every time, and he's not afraid of the moment," noting the value of those traits for pitching in the back of a bullpen.
Front Office Strategy and Bullpen Overhaul
Nationals President of Baseball Operations Paul Toboni is expected to be aggressive in overhauling the team's pitching unit through free agency or trades. While pursuing external options, Toboni is also considering internal candidates like Sinclair for greater roles.
The move comes after the Nationals blew a record-setting number of saves in 2026, leaving several bullpen roles open. Trade deadline acquisition Yovanny Cruz profiles as a potential closer due to his fastball-slider combination, though he has struggled with command issues.
Sinclair's path to a larger role was not immediate. The 27-year-old former 16th-round pick was not invited to big league spring training camp in 2026 and began the season with Triple-A Rochester. His call-up in September provided the opportunity to demonstrate his viability at the major league level.
The Nationals appear prepared to utilize Sinclair in a larger capacity next season, contingent on his health and performance during winter workouts and Grapefruit League action in 2027.
