Toboni’s Aggressive Offseason Strategy

Washington Nationals president of baseball operations Paul Toboni is preparing for a pivotal offseason aimed at accelerating the franchise's rebuild. According to Sports Illustrated, Toboni is considering aggressive moves within the trade market to boost the team's talent level.

The organization previously engaged in preliminary discussions regarding outfielder Jacob Young last offseason. The Nationals loosely shopped Young during that period to gauge potential market return but did not finalize a deal at that time.

Current reports suggest the two sides may engage again as the Yankees look to address specific roster needs. The Nationals are reportedly hoping to acquire win-now players or future pieces from New York to improve their roster for the 2027 wild card mix.

Yankees Seek Defensive Stability in Center Field

The New York Yankees have identified center field as a position requiring reinforcement. The team is dealing with uncertainty following center fielder Trent Grisham's disappointing 2026 season, after which he became a free agent.

According to Sports Illustrated, the Yankees are hesitant to start Spencer Jones every day or utilize Cody Bellinger in center field. With Aaron Judge’s health declining and his age increasing, the organization is seeking defensive stability in that position.

The New York Post reported that the Yankees were previously interested in Jacob Young. It remains unclear whether formal trade talks occurred during that period or exactly when the interest was shown.

Young’s Value and Roster Implications

Jacob Young enters the offseason as a two-time Gold Glove finalist who posted career-highs last season. His statistical line included 10 home runs, 35 extra-base hits, 50 RBIs, and an OPS+ of 94.

Young holds multiple years of club control remaining and is arbitration eligible starting in 2027. This contract status makes him a viable asset for teams seeking cost-controlled talent.

For Washington, trading Young could help resolve the "Dylan Crews conundrum." Moving Young would provide Crews more runway as an everyday player, despite Crews being considered a below-average defender compared to Young.
