The Call for Royal Neutrality and Dignity
Chibudom Nwuche, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the South-South Development Commission, has issued a strong directive to traditional rulers in Ekpeye Kingdom, urging them to remain strictly neutral in political matters. The advice was delivered during activities marking his 65th birthday in Ochiba on Sunday, where Nwuche emphasized that preserving dignity and respect among subjects is paramount for any monarch.
Nwuche stated clearly that it is inappropriate for a royal father to engage in partisan politics. He argued that kings must stay away from political activities to maintain their honor and the integrity of their institution. According to Nwuche, the role of a traditional ruler is to be "a father to all, irrespective of party affinities," and engaging in partisan activities risks causing disaffection among subjects.
He directed sharp criticism at current practices by some kings who attend political rallies, wear regalia, and dance as politicians. Nwuche noted that he was instrumental in the emergence of some of these monarchs, making his critique particularly pointed. He advised them to abandon such displays to maintain their honor and dignity, warning that such actions diminish the respect attached to the traditional institution.
Security Reforms and Agricultural Recovery
Beyond political neutrality, Nwuche addressed pressing security concerns in the region by advocating for an amnesty program for repentant cultists. He argued that such a program is essential to improve security conditions and allow residents to return to farming without fear. The former Deputy Speaker linked the improvement of security directly to the ability of the local population to resume agricultural activities safely.
Nwuche expressed hope that an amnesty program would be introduced before the end of the year. He emphasized the urgency of this measure, noting its potential to prevent young people from being killed. The call for amnesty was framed as a necessary step to restore peace and enable economic recovery through agriculture in the area.
Political Allegiance and Community Unity
Despite his advice on royal neutrality, Nwuche did not shy away from expressing his own political stance. He urged residents of Ekpeye Kingdom to support President Bola Tinubu and candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Renewed Hope Coalition in the 2027 elections. This endorsement was delivered alongside a call for the people of the kingdom to unite for the development of the area.
Birthday Celebrations and Gratitude
The remarks were made during activities marking Nwuche's 65th birthday in Ochiba, his country home. The event included a prayer session where Nwuche thanked widows and Christian faithful who attended. These acknowledgments highlighted the community support surrounding the celebration, even as he used the platform to address broader issues of governance, security, and political conduct.
