Alumni Honored for Athletic Achievements
Monika Haber Burrescia, Karin Haber Sevener, and Tyler Kunz were inducted into the Port Washington Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday night, according to the Port Washington Herald.
The three alumni hold plaques among 16 that now grace a wall at Port Washington High School. The induction ceremony took place below where the permanent plaques are displayed.
Athletic Director John Bunyan said the new additions serve as inspiration for current students. "Once those go up, we have tons of kids walking by, they glance up, they read. It’s truly inspiring," Bunyan said.
Running Twins Set Conference Records
Monika Haber Burrescia and Karin Haber Sevener were star running twins who helped Port Washington’s cross country team win the North Shore Conference in 1992 and 1993. As freshmen, they were the top runners on the first Pirates’ cross country team to win the conference title.
Both sisters attended Mississippi State University on track and cross country scholarships and competed in the Southeast Conference.
Monika Haber Burrescia earned a doctorate of physical therapy and works as a physical therapist in Saukville. Karin Haber Sevener earned a master’s degree in sports administration and works as Grafton’s senior coordinator and recreation supervisor.
Kunz Earns 12 Varsity Letters
Tyler Kunz, a 1991 Port Washington High School graduate, earned 12 varsity letters in football, wrestling, track and field, and baseball.
During his high school career, Kunz helped Port reach a Division 2 runner-up finish in football in 1990. He also finished second at 189 pounds in the 1990 state wrestling tournament.
Kunz played for Michigan Tech, where he twice earned the Fred Baird Memorial Award for the team’s best defensive player. His school records of 24 tackles in a game and 139 in a season, both set in 1994, still stand.
Kunz works as an environmental engineer and lives in Cedarburg.
