Prime Minister Acknowledges Local Enterprise in Radio Address
Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the economic and nutritional significance of Amla and Moringa in his 'Mann Ki Baat' radio address on Sunday, according to reports from Bhaskar Live. The Prime Minister acknowledged Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district under the 'One District One Product' (ODOP) initiative, noting the region's deep-rooted connection to Amla production.
During the broadcast, Modi praised women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) for their contributions. He specifically mentioned the "Savitri Phule Self Help Group" located in Devgarh Kamasi village, citing their work in producing Amla candy, murabba, and juice.
Group President Describes Mention as Major Endorsement
Kamlesh Kumari, the president of the Savitri Phule Self Help Group, was listening to the program on her mobile phone when the group was named. She described the Prime Minister's specific mention and praise as a matter of great pride for the entire collective.
"This was a big endorsement of our hard work and dedication," Kumari told IANS. The group, which includes Secretary Sushma Devi and nine other women, has been operational for five years. Kumari stated that the group was formed in 2020 with government assistance to make village women self-reliant by providing local employment opportunities.
Production and Market Distribution
The SHG members process several quintals of Amla to create various products. These items are attractively packaged and sold at market stalls set up during fairs and government events. The income generated from these sales is shared among all the women in the group.
Members Urge Direct Procurement System
Following the broadcast, members of the group expressed gratitude for the recognition. Sushma Devi thanked the Prime Minister for mentioning their group and expressed appreciation to the bank for granting a loan that enabled their work to progress.
Kumari used the platform to urge the government to establish a system for the direct procurement of products made by self-help groups. She stated that such a system would provide better market access and increase income for the women involved.
