Astros Select Former Cardinals Executive for Top Front Office Role

The Houston Astros announced the hiring of Randy Flores as their new general manager on Friday night, according to the Houston Herald. Flores, who served as the St. Louis Cardinals' assistant general manager for eight seasons from 2019 to 2026, becomes the 15th general manager in franchise history.

This appointment marks the first time in Flores' career that he will manage a baseball operations department. He replaces Dana Brown, with whom the Astros parted ways on August 24. The move also follows the departure of Chris Correa, who received a 46-month prison sentence for hacking into the Astros personnel and scouting database.

The Athletic reported earlier that Brewers assistant GM Matt Kleine was initially favored for the position. The Astros reportedly offered Kleine the job after the Brewers won the World Series, but a deal did not come together.

Scouting Background and Draft Success in St. Louis

Owner Jim Crane stated that Flores had a "huge impact" on the Cardinals over the last 10 seasons. Crane expressed being thoroughly impressed with Flores' background in scouting and player acquisition.

Flores joined the Cardinals front office in 2015 as director of scouting, following work as a college baseball analyst for ESPN and the Pac-12 Network. He also founded video scouting technology company OnDeck Digital in 2015 before taking the scouting role.

During his tenure as director of scouting, the Cardinals drafted several notable players. These include All-Star pitcher Zac Gallen (third round, 2016), utility man Tommy Edman (sixth round, 2016), utility man Brendan Donovan (seventh round, 2018), and outfielder Lars Nootbar (eighth round, 2018). Baseball America ranked the Cardinals' farm system No. 2 in MLB during Flores' time there.

Playing Career and Front Office Trajectory

Flores brings a unique perspective to the general manager role, having played professionally himself. He appeared in over 200 games as a relief pitcher across eight major league seasons, including five with the Cardinals. His pitching career included throwing 250 innings with 350 appearances.

This transition from player to executive highlights his long-standing involvement in baseball operations. His appointment signals a shift in leadership for the Astros, who are looking to build on their recent success with a new voice at the helm of their front office.
