Rubio’s Address in Athens

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a speech at Pnyx hill in Athens, Greece, where he urged European nations to "awaken from its long slumber." The address was attended by senior Greek officials as part of Rubio's diplomatic engagement in the region.

In his remarks, Rubio stated that the United States has chosen the "unapologetic pursuit of national power." He outlined this strategy as including taking back control of critical supply chains, reindustrializing the economy, rebuilding defense capabilities, and fighting for dominance of future technologies and industries.

Rubio warned that Western civilization is currently at a "crossroads." He described two potential paths: maintaining its place at the head of the world or facing "atrophy, servitude, and decline." According to reports, the Trump administration hopes to reclaim the classical understanding of politics and statecraft for both the United States and the wider civilization.

Strategic Dialogue With Greece

Rubio participated in a "strategic dialogue" with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, focusing on regional and energy security. The discussions took place amid ongoing tensions resulting from wars in Iran and Ukraine.

During the visit, Rubio backed the alliance with Greece, specifically highlighting cooperation in the energy sector. He also announced a joint agreement between the two nations regarding information-sharing on drug trafficking and terrorism.

Greece is currently positioning itself as a key hub for natural gas transport in southeastern Europe. The country is utilizing recently opened pipelines and port infrastructure to contribute to an energy corridor through eastern Europe that extends to Ukraine.

Regional Security Concerns

The diplomatic visit comes as the United States addresses broader security challenges in Europe. Rubio previously argued in February that Europe was threatened by mass immigration and called for it to defend Christian civilization.

Rubio concluded his European trip with a visit to Portugal on Thursday, marking the end of his recent diplomatic tour of the continent.
