Tigers Fall Short of Playoffs After Bullpen Collapse

The Detroit Tigers concluded the 2026 Major League Baseball season with a 76-86 record, failing to secure a postseason berth. According to Sports Illustrated, the team’s inability to close out games was a defining characteristic of their campaign, as they blew 32 saves during the year.

The 32 blown saves ranked as the second-most in MLB for the season. The struggles were evident across the relief corps, with veteran closer Kenley Jansen blowing six saves for Detroit before showing improvement toward the end of the year. Another key reliever, Kyle Finnegan, posted career highs in ERA (4.30), WHIP (1.66), and opposing batting average (.289) during the 2026 season.

Despite the disappointing final standing, the Tigers identified several young players developing into future stars, including Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark. However, the team’s failure to convert save opportunities remains a primary concern as they look toward the winter months.

Free Agency Creates Urgency for Relief Pitchers

The Tigers face significant decisions regarding their relief corps as several key contributors enter free agency. Raisel Iglesias, who went 34-for-37 in save opportunities, is an unrestricted free agent. Additionally, relievers Adrian Morejon, Gregory Soto, and A.J. Minter are unrestricted free agents who could potentially return to Detroit.

Baseball operations president Scott Harris must identify the right players this offseason to address these bullpen issues, according to Sports Illustrated. The team needs to determine whether to re-sign existing talent or seek external solutions to stabilize the late-inning roles that contributed to their 32 blown saves.

Poststandout Bullpen Performance Highlights Gap

The disparity between Detroit’s bullpen and the league’s elite units was starkly illustrated by the performance of teams remaining in the postseason. Three of the four teams remaining in the postseason ranked in the top 10 in bullpen ERA, according to Inside the Pen as cited by Sports Illustrated.

The Tampa Bay Rays were the only team outside the top 10 in bullpen ERA among the four remaining postseason teams. Despite this relative weakness compared to their playoff peers, the Rays maintained an elite closer in Bryan Baker. This contrast underscores the level of relief pitching excellence required to compete at the highest level of MLB.
