Minister Clarifies Hostel Menu Proposal
Tamil Nadu Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu stated that the state government is considering a request from students in rural backgrounds to include beef as a non-vegetarian option on the menu at government-run student hostels. The current menus at these facilities feature chicken and mutton.
Arasu made the remarks after inspecting the M C Raja Social Justice Hostel in Saidapet on Monday evening. He told reporters that a section of hostellers from rural backgrounds had requested beef as an additional non-vegetarian option alongside the existing menu items.
The minister clarified that no final decision has been taken to include beef in the menu, stating he was merely acknowledging a representation made by students rather than announcing an immediate policy change. Arasu asserted that any final decision rests collectively with the government after consultations with officials and students.
Political Opposition and Protest Plans
The proposal sparked immediate opposition from Puthiya Tamilagam president K Krishnaswamy, who strongly argued that serving beef in government-run student hostels violates cultural norms and public sentiments. Krishsaswamy claimed the move could hurt the sentiments of many students and the general public.
Asserting that changing the policy is inappropriate given that state hostels have traditionally served eggs, chicken, and mutton, Krishnaswamy called for a withdrawal of the statement. He demanded that Minister Arasu offer a public apology.
In a video statement on Wednesday, Krishnaswamy announced plans for protests in front of district collectors' offices and the minister's residence on September 30. He accused the minister of toeing the RSS line on beef politics and stated that Arasu lacked knowledge of the subject.
Menu Revisions and Grievance Mechanisms
Addressing the broader context of hostel food services, Arasu noted that hostel menus are routinely revised based on student feedback. He cited recent changes such as replacing upma and semiya with idli and dosa. The minister also mentioned plans to introduce weekly biryani on Mondays.
During his visit to the M C Raja Social Justice Hostel, Arasu inaugurated a 24x7 Control Room for the Directorate of Adi Dravidar Welfare. This facility is designed to address student grievances regarding food and other issues via phone, WhatsApp, and X.
