Protests Disrupt Campaign Event

President Donald Trump faced interruptions from at least a dozen demonstrators during a campaign rally for Senate candidate Ken Paxton at Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026.

The president’s message was interrupted repeatedly by protesters throughout the event, including by one individual who appeared to be close to the stage. Some of the demonstrators were led away by police, according to reporting from The Morning Sun.

At one point, Trump stepped away from the microphone briefly after an interruption. He remarked about a protester, "He’s going back home to mom," before adding, "But what he doesn’t know is his mom voted for Trump."

Rally Speech and Policy Stances

During the rally, Trump pledged to award retired baseball star Roger Clemens the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He also restated his support for the death penalty for drug dealers.

Trump addressed fuel costs in the context of ongoing conflicts, claiming that high prices are "a small price to pay" for the war. He stated, "You want to see problems? Let them hit San Diego, let them hit Los Angeles," adding, "We’re not going to let that happen. We protect our cities. We protect our country."

Trump described Paxton as "perhaps the greatest attorney general in the United States of America" and "a fantastic man." He noted that he had endorsed Paxton over incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the GOP primary.

Political Context and Opposition Response

The Republican Party has devoted more than $300 million to elections in Texas so far, marking Trump’s third trip to the state in less than a month.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott did not attend the rally. Instead, he was scheduled to attend the dedication of a hospital about 330 miles away.

Texas Democratic Party spokesperson Jacob Long criticized Abbott’s absence. Long stated that Abbott has "never been shy about embracing Donald Trump" but now has "somewhere else to be" as families are crushed by record-high prices driven by Trump’s tariffs and war with Iran.

The race for the Senate seat in Texas has drawn attention due to several factors. Texas has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1988, but candidate James Talarico’s fundraising, Trump’s low approval rating, and concerns about Paxton’s character have put the race in play.
