Identifying Roster Gaps and Free Agency

The Philadelphia Phillies have identified specific areas where roster depth must be improved to achieve their goal as a contender, according to team president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. The front office is focusing on strengthening the bullpen and the left side of the infield.

Several key contributors are hitting free agency, creating immediate vacancies that the team must address. Alec Bohm, Luis Arraez, Edmundo Sosa, and Bryan De La Cruz are all set to become free agents, potentially requiring replacements for their roles on the roster.

Managing Veteran Workloads

To manage the physical toll of a long season, the Phillies plan to give veteran players more rest during the regular season. The objective is to keep these players fresh for the postseason.

Dombrowski outlined this strategy in comments reported by Matt Gelb and Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic. "One of the things we need to do... is to create some more days off for our veteran players to keep them more rested," Dombrowski said.

First Base Rotation Plans

Bryce Harper is expected to return at first base in 2027. To facilitate this, Kyle Schwarber will handle infield corner duties for approximately 30 games, allowing Harper to rest and serve as the designated hitter during those stretches.

Schwarber will work at first base during spring training to evaluate the feasibility of this plan. The arrangement comes amid uncertainty regarding Bohm’s future in Philadelphia, despite his performance at first base after Arraez was acquired from the San Francisco Giants.

Catcher and Shortstop Evaluations

Catcher J.T. Realmuto has expressed openness to catching less frequently in 2027. He communicated his physical and mental state directly to Dombrowski, stating, "Physically, I feel as good as I’ve ever felt... Mentally, with all the added responsibilities, I feel more drained." This admission highlights the internal pressure on veteran catchers who balance defensive duties with the strategic demands of the game.

Meanwhile, the team is evaluating Trea Turner’s role at shortstop versus a potential move to the outfield. The decision reflects a broader organizational effort to optimize defensive alignments while preserving player longevity.

Outfield Acquisition Targets

The Phillies are seeking another everyday outfield option, preferably right-handed. Free agents Seiya Suzuki and Randy Arozarena have been identified as potential fits for this need.
