Refining Margins Drive Stronger Half-Year Results

Viva Energy Group Ltd (ASX:VEA) posted a significantly stronger half-year result, driven by a surge in refining margins that pushed replacement cost operating earnings to roughly two and a half times the level of the prior period. The company’s financial performance was bolstered by specific operational factors, including a more than doubling of the Geelong Refining Margin. This increase was attributed to a regional shortage of refining capacity and supply disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The elevated margins had direct implications for government support mechanisms. Viva Energy did not receive a fuel security services payment for the half-year because its refining margins exceeded the threshold required for such government assistance.

Operational Challenges at Geelong Refinery

Despite the financial gains from high margins, Viva Energy continues to manage operational constraints at its key facilities. An outage at the company’s Geelong refinery, caused by an April fire that damaged the alkylation unit, has kept that specific unit offline through next year. The residue catalytic cracking unit at the same facility restarted in June. Management stated that regional refining margins are expected to remain above long-term averages for the remainder of the financial year, which concludes in December. This outlook persists despite broader market movements; oil prices eased on Monday following a US-brokered energy ceasefire, although crude prices remained elevated due to continued attacks in the Middle East.

Commercial and Retail Earnings Boost

Beyond refining, other segments of Viva Energy’s business contributed to the half-year performance. Commercial and industrial customer earnings were increased by hedging strategies implemented prior to the conflict, as well as by term supply contracts. Meanwhile, convenience and mobility earnings were supported by growth in fuel volumes and firm retail margins. As of the last data update on October 13, 2026, Viva Energy Group Ltd stock was listed at 3.22 AUD, reflecting an increase of 0.040, or 1.258%.
