Two strangers answer an advertisement in The New York Times for a river-view apartment. Paul Friedman, a married advertising copywriter, and Ann Miller, a discontented housewife, tour the space; before they can leave, they discover that the door has been accidentally locked and they are trapped inside together. As they exchange details about their lives, a strong connection forms, and they find themselves attracted to one another.
