A Couple
A Couple follows a long-standing marriage between a man and a woman, with the man identified as Leo Tolstoy and the woman as his wife Sophia. They were married for 36 years, had 13 children, nine of whom survived. Each kept a diary. Although they lived together in the same house, they wrote letters to one another frequently. Tolstoy insisted that they read their diaries aloud to dinner guests. The film centers on Sophia's intimate monologue about the joys and struggles of their life together, loosely drawn from their letters and diary entries, and depicts a dysfunctional partnership marked by frequent quarrels and occasional moments of passionate reconciliation.
