Alone in Berlin
Berlin in June 1940, as Nazi propaganda extols the regime's victory over France, a kitchen-cum-living room in Prenzlauer Berg is steeped in a working-class family's grief. Anna and Otto Quangel, whose son has fallen at the front, are a working-class couple who once believed in and followed the Führer, only to realize his promises were lies and deceit. They begin writing postcards as a form of resistance to awaken others, bearing the slogans 'Stop the war machine!' and 'Kill Hitler!' They distribute these cards in the entrances of tenement buildings and in stairwells. But the SS and the Gestapo are soon onto them, and even their neighbours pose a threat.
