The opening clash between the Systems Commonwealth and the Nietzschean fleets triggers a desperate bid for freedom as Captain Dylan Hunt and the Andromeda Ascendant race to warn the Commonwealth of the imminent onslaught. As they flee the first Nietzschean strike, the Andromeda and Hunt are drawn into the event horizon of a black hole, freezing in time for 300 years. Meanwhile, the Eureka Maru's crew under Captain Beka Valentine attempts to salvage the Andromeda to sell for a Nightsider's ransom. When the Andromeda is finally pulled free, Hunt is unfrozen and must defend his ship against salvagers and the Nietzschean mercenaries led by Tyr Anasazi.
