Father Peter Clifford journeys from England to Ballykissangel, a small Irish parish that proves more lively than the sleepy village he expected. The local bar owner, Assumpta Fitzgerald, greets the new curate with a pronounced attitude toward the clergy. Niamh wonders what life with her Garda boyfriend will be like after marriage and insists they should live together beforehand, but he refuses to risk a mortal sin. Both seek advice from the arriving priest. As Father Clifford takes up his post, a modern confessional is being delivered, donated by Niamh's father, Brian Quigley, who believes a fax-equipped confessional will be a great addition to the church.
