Bang the Drum Slowly
Set against the canvas of a New York professional baseball club, the tale follows two players: Henry Wiggen, the team’s star pitcher, and Bruce Pearson, the ordinary, everyday catcher who has earned the friendship of every teammate. In the off-season, Bruce learns he is terminally ill, and Henry—his sole true friend—commits to being the one constant presence during Bruce’s final season with the club. Over the course of the season, Henry and his teammates grapple with Bruce’s advancing illness while striving to make his last year a memorable one.
