Martin Best, a brilliant surgeon, abruptly abandons his prestigious career in Boston to take up practice as a general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child. However, his blunt, borderline rude bedside manner unsettles the village's quirky, needy residents, and he quickly alienates the town, even though he's its sole physician.
