Burden of Dreams

Set in the Amazon rainforest in 1979, the making of Fitzcarraldo (1982)—the film directed by German filmmaker Werner Herzog—unfolds amid a cascade of troubles. The crew contends with casting difficulties, tribal clashes, and accidents, among a multitude of other setbacks. Yet nothing compares to the monumental feat of dragging a colossal steamboat up a mountainside, as Herzog follows a path of unsettling madness to realize his audacious vision.
