In the 12th century, Brother Cadfael is an Anglo-Welsh monk who, as a retired crusader disappointed in love, serves as the herbalist in charge of the gardens at Shrewsbury Abbey. He is frequently called on to solve murders and other crimes in and around Shrewsbury, Shropshire, in the border country where England meets Wales.
