Captain Newfoundland
Geoff Stirling was a media magnate, athlete, and the creator of the psychedelic superhero Captain Newfoundland, as well as a vocal opponent of his home province joining Confederation. He wore many hats— and more. To honor a figure as multifaceted as the film’s central subject, director Mike Feehan directs the lens toward himself and co-director Jamie Miller as they weave archival footage, animation, and fantastical recreations drawn from Stirling’s experimental 1970s late-night television program, all in keeping with NTV’s original broadcast mission. Captain Newfoundland offers an illuminating and wildly entertaining portrait of a complex man and the impact he exerted on the province, an influence Stirling suggests may be only the tip of the long-lost island of Atlantis.
