Captains Courageous
Harvey Cheyne, Jr., the second-richest person in the world, orphaned and spoiled rotten, heads to England for boarding school, a voyage that begins with a cigar and a brush with the sea. Seasick and pulled over the rail for real, he is rescued by Dan Troop aboard a Gloucester fishing sailboat. He spends three months at sea under the firm but fair Captain Troop (earning a fair wage of $10.50 a month — if you don’t work you don’t eat). The voyage is hard and dangerous, and through hardship and tragedy, Harvey undergoes a profound coming-of-age.
