The film's enigmatic title is justified by its dual-layer structure: two films nested within the feature. One strand follows a real day in the life of Moscow architect Alexander Petrovich Chernov, marked by his psychological crisis; the other presents Chernov's fiction. A fate distinct from the real world—different country, a different life—awaits in that imagined existence to which Chernov strives to gain access. To secure a journey to Spain, he will have to betray. There, for a moment, the doubles are near, and both narratives stand on the brink of death. Who will die in the spring of 1978?
