Copying Beethoven
A fictionalized portrait of Beethoven in the closing chapter of his life, as he wrestles to complete his Ninth Symphony in 1824. The composer is racing to finish a work that eludes him after years of silence, while contending with deafness, loneliness and personal trauma. A copyist is urgently needed to assist the maestro. Enter Anna Holtz, a fictional young conservatory student and aspiring composer. Beethoven, mercurial and wary that a woman might contribute to his masterpiece, gradually grants her trust and help, and comes to regard her with genuine affection. By the time the premiere arrives, her presence has become indispensable. Her profound understanding of his music allows her to correct errors he has made, and her passionate temperament opens a portal into his private world.
