From Boston, Michaela "Mike" Quinn follows in her father's footsteps to become a physician, practicing beside him. His sudden death robs her not only of her closest ally but also of their shared medical practice. Faced with scarce opportunities for women physicians, Michaela answers a Colorado Territory advertisement for a doctor and leaves her elegant Boston home for the western town of Colorado Springs. Upon arrival, she encounters ridicule, as the townsfolk expect a male doctor. She befriends Charlotte Cooper (Diane Ladd) and forms a lasting bond with her.
