This film chronicles the dawn of humanity’s push into space and the fate of the first cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. Its central motif is the fight to be first: the space race to crown the inaugural cosmonaut, advances in missile technology, and the confrontation of superpowers—the USSR and the USA. A select cadre of astronauts was drawn from three thousand fighter pilots nationwide; twenty were chosen as the cream of the crop. Which of them would fly first remained unknown. In this arena, they had to contend not only with the pull of the Earth...
