Naively impressionable Vidya Bhalla longs for a husband who embodies a fearless, protective hero—a man who would leap into flames to rescue another, combining formidable strength with romantic tenderness. She spots all these qualities in Shiva Sathe (Jackie Shroff), the son of Havaldar Purshotam Sathe, whose sole aspiration is to see Shiva become a Police Inspector. Vidya informs her father, Prithviraj, that she has found her ideal match. The Bhallas and the Sathes meet, and the couple are formally engaged.
