Set in 1956, the story follows Geordie as he rails against the erosion of decency, a mood amplified by Elvis Presley’s presence; meanwhile, mold in the vestry prompts Mrs. Chapman to grumble about baking soda versus vinegar. Sidney yearns for action, not idle grumbling, and the arrival of an African American reverend to discuss religion's role in the civil rights movement sparks in Sidney a fresh inspiration—and perhaps something more.
