Hans Staden
Just before his planned return to Europe, German sailor Hans Staden endures a prolonged involuntary sojourn in 16th‑century Brazil, where he is captured by a hostile cannibal tribe. To secure his survival, he asserts he is not Portuguese, their enemies, but a friend of the French, their allies, insisting that his God would be angered if they were to eat him.
