In the East, 1960 marks the era. Gergiev, the Republic's supreme leader, unveils the manned spaceflight program Project Mechtat (Dream), which, if successful, would stand as humanity's earliest celestial milestone. Lev Leps, a substitute astronaut candidate, is ordered to undertake a top-secret mission. The Nosferatu Project—a program that experiments with vampires prior to manned missions—will enlist Irina Luminesk as the test subject, with Lev assigned to monitor and train her. Despite being buffeted by the barriers of rivalry and the egos of nations, Lev and Irina share a genuine bond as they pursue the universe.
