Lasse Pöysti makes his directorial debut with this feature. Helena Plays On (1951) is an adaptation of Aino Räsänen’s second Helena novel of the same name. As the Winter War erupts, Arttu (Jussi Jurkka), the son of Helena (Irma Seikkula) and Jari Junkkeri (Erkki Viljos), goes to the front. Arttu proposes to his beloved Elina (Leena Häkinen), but the upheavals of history intervene. When no word reaches the family by the war’s end, relatives assume Arttu is dead—everyone except Helena.
