During a highly charged trial, John Adams defends the British sentries accused in the Boston Massacre, who claim they were provoked into firing upon the assembled crowd. Adams's successful defense earns him offers of positions within the Massachusetts government. Following John Hancock's stirring of a crowd to tar and feather a representative of the British East India Tea Company, and Britain's harsh response to the growing unrest through oppressive measures, Adams ultimately speaks out against British policy and chooses to represent Massachusetts in the Continental Congress.
