When Amy is reassigned to the criminal division, Bruce remains in juvenile court, and she inherits Spencer, an insolent clerk. Lauren endures a miserable first day at junior high, but day two brings a spark when she discovers a boyfriend who is a year older, much to her mother's dismay. After accepting Stuart's proposal, Amy begins to suffer nightmares about the wedding. Recently unemployed due to budget cuts, Donna assists Peter in caring for his sons while Gillian lies in a coma. Ellen, D.C.F.'s newest employee, leverages her experience as a former foster child to help Maxine cope with a teenage runaway from her foster home. Fed up with his impudence and disloyalty, Amy fires Spencer and promotes Donna, a recent law school graduate. Amy's predecessor in the criminal division warns of retaliation should she consider overturning his decision to suppress evidence in a capital murder case. Gillian finally awakens from her coma.
