In Ukraine, 2000, eight-year-old Kairo and twelve-year-old Stanislas form a close friendship at the Svitlyachok orphanage, bonded through daily routines and small adventures. After stealing chocolate for his friend, Kairo ends up trapped beneath the principal's desk, where he witnesses Stanislas being adopted.
