Set in 1990s Los Angeles, a young Black couple from disparate worlds navigate the crucibles of ambition and the art of following their hearts. Nuri sparkles with buoyant energy and sizable dreams, striving to establish herself as a sitcom staff writer while juggling a sequence of romances. Yasir, an aspiring director and writer, encounters a snag and steers an on-again/off-again course with his ex. The narrative unfolds through the present-day perspectives of Nuri and Yasir as they revisit the social issues and the rich Black culture that helped shape who they are today.
