Harinarain Singh, alias Hariya, has no recollection of his birth, parents, or a family home. In a confrontation with Thakur Balram Singh’s hoodlums, he is left unconscious at the temple’s doorway, while the Poojary tends to him and an elderly, unhinged woman prays for his well-being. When he awakens, the Poojary reveals that the woman—known as 'Pagli' (madwoman)—is his mother, and that his father was a farmer named Ram Singh who died of shock after Balram and his men seized their land. Pagli soon passes away, and Hariya pledges to reclaim his land from Balram. Balram, crafty as ever, transfers the land into the name of his nephew, Balraj, a man reputed to be Hariya’s close friend, with designs of sowing discord between them. Upon Balraj’s return home, he accepts the land from his uncle and resolves to oppose Hariya with all his might, especially when he discovers that the woman he loves, Sharda, is living with Hariya.
