Ukawa Taeko withdraws her appeal in a murder case, despite her lawyer's insistence. She owns the boarding house where her attorney Fujii lived during his law school days. Fujii struggled through school, but Taeko's support helped him become a lawyer. Taeko also grapples with her husband Shigeharu's large debt. To end the struggle, Taeko killed a moneylender who came to collect. The lingering question remains: why did she kill the lender?
