Following a raucous night of drinking, Maude, Walter, and Arthur awaken to a trio of unsettling discoveries: Maude and Arthur have shared a bed; the living room lies in shambles from their chaotic night; and Walter has made an obscene phone call to Maude's mother. Carol suggests that Walter may be battling a drinking problem, but he refuses to acknowledge it. Later, still in the grip of intoxication, Maude and Walter engage in a bitter argument, and Walter slaps Maude.
